John Deere Receives Large Forest Machine Order from Brazil

Forestry Brazil MOLINE, Ill. (March 01, 2007) — John Deere Forestry has received an order for 18 cut-to-length excavator-based harvesters,18 harvester heads, and nine forwarders from Brazilian paper company Suzano Papel e Celulose. The company also ordered a John Deere track harvester simulator with the TimberRite™ measuring and control system.

Together with seven purpose-built wheel harvesters and two forwarders already delivered to Suzano by John Deere Forestry’s Brazilian subsidiary, the machines represent 75 percent of Suzano’s equipment purchases over the past year.

Suzano Papel e Celulose is one of the largest integrated producers of paper and eucalyptus pulp in Latin America. Suzano produces cellulose and paper exclusively from its cultivation of planted forests, and the company is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council for its silviculture plantation management.

The equipment orders are recognition of John Deere’s leadership position in the South American forestry market, said Emilio Sabetta, John Deere Forestry’s director of sales and marketing for South America.

”Deere has a long and well-positioned place in South American forestry,” Sabetta said. “There is strong growth in the demand for both full-tree and cut-to-length technologies, and we are the pre-eminent manufacturer and market leader in both. We will continue to strengthen our wide sales and service coverage with our customers in South America, which is one of our main growth areas in global forestry business,” he said.

Brazil is the world’s largest short-fiber pulp producer, and South America produces about 175 million cubic meters of the world’s annual round wood production of 1.5 billion cubic meters.

About $17 billion in pulp mill investments in South America between 2006 and 2012 have already been announced. The investments are expected to double the 9 million tons of pulp production recorded in 2004 in Brazil, Chile and Uruguay.

John Deere’s South American Distribution Center was established in 1996 in Alphaville, Sao Paulo, and serves John Deere independent and company dealers that also cover Chile, Argentina, Uruguay and Venezuela.
