A Nautical Union
Island Spirit and Lexi II
Two Florida boaters find common ground on the water with their John Deere-powered Hatteras yachts

It’s a fact that boating brings people together. That’s certainly the case for boat owners Barry Freeman and Richard Beattie. The two never realized how much they had in common until each purchased Hatteras 46 yachts in different states but ended up dry-docked next to each other in Florida. These sister vessels share the same vintage, the same size, and were selected for their seaworthiness and sport-fishing capabilities.

When it was time to repower their vessels, Barry and Richard agreed that twin 292-kW (526 hp) John Deere PowerTech 6125AFM75 marine engines were the power of choice. In fact, both even installed ZF transmissions with a 1.75:1 gear ratio that turn 28 x 32-inch (711 x 813 mm) props. But don’t think these two are joined at the hip. Barry and Richard did their research and selected John Deere engines based on their own individual needs and requirements. What follows are snapshot profiles of the two that reveal their similarities and individuality, and their preference for John Deere marine diesel engines.
