I'm glad that I purchased the John Deere X390 lawn mower. The meadows and yards that I mow with their many types of grasses are more challenging that a typical suburban lawn and the 390 is tackling them beautifully. It's quiet, has a smooth ride, and because of the piston, the steering wheel doesn't jump in my hand with every small rock on the cart paths. With the hydraulic system raising and lowering the deck along with starting the mower is a breeze. The John Deer group in Deerfield, Ma at United Ag & Turn is dedicated to providing excellent customer service. It was a pleasure working with them.

Mulching does not work. Installed incorrectly.

Bought with the mulching attachment installed. I called dealership to inform them the unit does not close off the discharge opening. I was told to bring it in and they would look at it. Or I would have to pay to have them pick up and deliver. I’ll just fix it myself. Purchased one month ago. I like all the other stuff.

The X390 is a VERY nice machine!!

I would have rated 4-3/4 stars if possible because of one small complaint. Power steering, cruise control, gas gauge, and an improved seat and ride......small things that go a long way to the rider's comfort. Between my hubs and me, we do have a difference of opinion on the "reverse" option. It is now located on the left side of the machine. Our old one is on the right, Being hubs is left-handed, he prefers the left side reverse. I, however, prefer the right. I have to really concentrate so that I don't kill the mower deck when using this new machine. The power steering, however, is absolutely awesome and more than makes up for the reverse location. This machine turns so tight that it's almost like having a zerio-radius machine. No more sore ribs for this woman after mowing 2 acres of lawn!!! We're hoping the ignition switch/key loosen up a bit. They are quite stiff and somewhat awkwardly located. There's not much room for a man's large hand to grip the key, especially if he's got hand problems to begin with. This is our 4th John Deere and we won't buy anything else.

Great tractor, power steering absolutely makes it. Would like to give the combination 5 stars, but the old 44” piranha deck on my previous LX178 gave a more uniform cut. Double checked deck level and everything checks within spec. Middle blade seems to cut higher at times. The new 48” does have mulching kit installed.

I bought the lawn tractor a month ago. Been disappointed. It does not start most of the time. Have to try several times especially if the engine has been sitting for a long time. Also, there is some oil on the front deck. I have reached out to the dealer via email and phone calls without response. It works great on a flat surface if you can get it to start. It does not work well even on minor hills. It tends to get stuck dry patchy hill area and have had to drive in reverse to get tractor out.

My new X390 is a big improvement over the 2019 X390 that I traded in The seat on the new one is so much more comfortable. This compensates for the lack of suspension on these 390s. I miss the hand grips that were on the underside of the molded seat on the 2019 model.

The "Sweet Spot" of riding lawn mowers.

Smooth, comfortable, superb traction and easy steering. Really enjoy this riding lawn tractor. The X390 replaced a Husqvarna YTH22V 42. What a step up! Easy to get on and off. The 48" deck is perfect for narrow mowing, does not scalp rougher parts of the lawn, and turns effortlessly. Even without a locking rear differential this tractor turns up inclines with limited loss of traction on the uphill drive wheel. The tractor is to heavy for my 300lbs capacity mower lift. I upgraded to a 550lbs mower lift for mower deck cleaning and maintenance. The price of the tractor is very appropriate for all the features (power mower lift, power steering and tilt steering wheel). Outstanding riding lawn mower!

As someone in his late 70's with 3 acres to mow, I had used my x380 for 520 hrs. It mowed well but I would be very sore in my hands and shoulders from turning it. Also my left hip hurt, ah, the joys of arthritis! Have mowed 3 times now with the x390 and there is a WORLD of difference in the way I feel after mowing. The power steering, tilt wheel, and power deck are fantastic. This mower also came with power mulching at the push of a button. When I get into heavy grass I push the button and mulch the heavy stuff leaving no wind rows.

This is a great lawn tractor. We added on the electric mulch control and it is one of the best features. The only reason I gave it a 4 instead of a 5 is that having to push the yellow button to reverse while mowing. If you don't do a great deal of reversing while mowing it's fine. However, I do. If you touch the reverse pedal without pushing that button first, the mower shuts down. Can be annoying. Safety feature. It is a very comfortable tractor and does have great features.

I find the X390 to be efficient and extremely maneuverable. I went back to a yard tractor, from a zero turn. Nothing was lost. Due to bad shoulders, the hydraulic steering is a welcome addition. The hydraulic deck makes setting the cut height effortless. Although access to the oil filter is a little tight, changing the oil is easy and not as messy as other machines I have had.

I bought this a month ago and so far I am happy with my purchase. It replaces an older JD Lx280. The power steering and hydraulic lift deck are great. The seat is comfortable and the information display on the dash is a big plus. My only complaint so far is the deck wash system doesn't do a real good job of cleaning and removing the deck is easier than the LX280 because the wheels rotate but it is a bit cumbersome to move under the tractor. Would be nice if JD would design a drive over deck for these series of tractor. Overall the quality is very good and I would recommend it to anyone interested in this size tractor.

Bought this for our business to mow the lawn and clear the parking lot in the winter with a snowblower. Have 5 hours on it mowing and it’s a fine machine. Does a beautiful job cutting the lawn. Makes the office look even better! The power flow bagger works like a charm even when the grass is damp. It’s much bigger machine that we need to mow, but with the parking lot, we needed a bigger machine. Also, the K58 transaxle was a plus for servicing.

The lawnmower is adequate. I’ve discovered, that it does not have as much power as I had expected of a lawnmower of the caliber. The deck also does not raise far enough off the ground to cope with heavy growth. I had to skip a mowing week and the lawnmower had difficulty with what had grown over a two week period. I was going to buy an X590, but the warranty did not justify it.

Have had the x390 for almost 2 years. Bought to replace my 2011 X320. It was purchased in the middle of Covid so that was a time when parts were not readily available as well as finding quality employees was also tough. I can tell the build quality is not the same as my X320. I've had some minor issues such as hard to start, wheel bearings warped, mowing assembly rattles and is loud. At least it is under warranty if it falls apart. I do like the new taller seat and power steering. At this price it should be top notch.

The X390 is an x360 on steroids with some flops. Controls and operator station is comfortable and easy to use. Now for the mower deck… x360 has it beat by miles!!! But over all it’s more improved and the hydrastaric transmission is diffently improved. I’ll know more about this x390 when mowing season comes around…

I bought this x390 a little over a month ago but haven’t really been able to mower/ use it because of all the rain we’ve been having here in SE Texas. I originally had an x360 which was the top of the line for the x300 series back in 2008. After 15 years I decided to get another top of the line x300 series and I think the x390 is it but I wish it was more like the x360 as far the mower deck. Also the kit available for adding the front blade to the x390 is more cumbersome then it needs to be. The design on the x360 for the front blade was way better. I’m not going to add the front blade because of this. The one thing I did find a little better then the x360 was the hydrostatic transmission. It does feel more powerful in reverse and not having to push to hard on the reverse pedal… I can probably give a better review after I have used it for a bit when spring comes around…

Great tractor! Works flawlessly, runs excellent. The cut is very good. I like that JD provides the deck height adjustment tools under the seat. I just wish the dealer had leveled the deck when it was prepped. The level was waaaay off, surprisingly so! Love the engine, just wish it had the bigger air filter like the zero turns. Stock filter is small, jammed under the engine cover, and totally plugged up at 34 hours! Just needs more attention I guess. Love the power steering. Cruise control is finicky, hard to set at an exact speed. Could use some further development to allow fine-tuning of ground speed.

This is my third John Deere lawn tractor over the past 50 years. I went from a 500 series lawn tractor to this 390. This is (in the tradition of John Deere) a good product, well engineered. At this point the only two things' I have noted as compared to my 500 is the power steering is not quite as responsive and it is a bit of an issue of traction on slopes. I hope the seat does not deteriorate!!!!

Love this mower! Had a Deere 155 mower for over 20yrs and it was time for a new one. It still ran fine but it was starting to rust out. Got the optional bagger with the blower motor also.For cutting and bagging this machine would be tough to beat. Ease of operation and user friendly controls. One thing I think could use improvement is the ply rating on the tires. Recently got a flat from a small puncture in the sidewall of the tire. The size of the tire also seemed to be hard to find the OEM style and width. Only other issue I had was the tube in bagger getting clogged when doing leaves this fall but that was an easy solve just by mulching the leaves by removing the bagger first and then going over a second time to bag them. I absolutely love my new machine and looking forward to many years of mowing to come. Keep up the great work and making of an outstanding product.

I owened a 280 lx for 18 years. This one of the best lawn mowers John Deere have ever built. Years of dependable service with very few problems. I just traded it in for a 390 with a power flow to pick up leaves. When they brought my new mower I hated to see it go. I will never buy any other lawn mower except a Deere. You get what you pay for and years of satisfaction. Hats off to John Deere.

Buy a Craftsman so much better

I had a 42” Craftsman lawn tractor for about 18 years. My wife decided we needed a Green lawn tractor when the Craftman finally died. What a mistake. I have two artificial knees so my mowing days are over. I can’t lift my leg high enough for the brake.

Best mower I've owned

Bought this 3 weeks ago from my local AgPro dealer in Dixie Ga. Excellent folks to deal with as I was not 100% sure of which mower to get. My salesman Richard was fantastic we discussed my property and I had him furnish me quotes for several different models. He was always fast to respond and super courteous with all my changes deciding on the best deal and mower for me. I mow right at 2.5 acres and had been spending over 2 hrs mowing with the old Craftsman LT 4500 with a 54" deck. Let me tell you stepping onto the X390 from that Craftsman was like climbing out of a Chevy Vega and getting into Rolls Royce. This machine is absolutely perfect. Power steering and deck lift are a dream to use. I run the same pattern I've always used when mowing and using the Mower Plus app the 3 mows I have4 completed thus far show a mow time average of one hour 12 minutes. That's a considerable time savings I'll really appreciate in a few months when temps climb into the mid to upper 90's and above. If you need to mow a similar size property, want to stay under 10k and want both a faster run time and a beautiful cut, look no further than the X390

Just bought a new x390 lawn tractor,has power steering! I own an acre of land,which is hilly,and i also live on a corner and my tractor does an excellent job of mowing,out next to the road, and up and down the hill in my yard. i just need to get some tires with bigger grips on the tread like industrial type tires as on turns up the hill and with the original turf tires i suffer wheel slippage. no biggie, but the tractor itself is fine.i am well satisfied with this tractor!!

Recently bought one yes its expensive but like it so far. My main thing i wanted was Kawasaki engine had one on my 06 cub cadet ZT 50" has 894.7 hours now. Really wanted a tractor style this time was thinking x354 four wheel steer but not one available so this with the power steering is great. Tilt steering cruze control nine. mine has a button to push to cut in reverse but if u accidentally hit the back up petal blades stop no biggie just gotta get used to it. I do wish I could get off it while leave engine running.

I bought an xuv560e s4 on march 14 2022 and it’s been in the shop repeatedly for throttle issues and now it’s in the shop for brake line problems,the guy that picked it up said it would be repaired right away because they were not busy and they would have it fixed and back to us ,we called them this morning and they hadn’t even pulled it in the shop ,I’m tired of the issues and run around every time my new xuv560e breaks down I’m calling an attorney today cause we spent to much and pay to much per month to have to deal with this!!

I purchased my X390 with a 44 inch Snow Blower this summer. I wanted the power lift and power steering and so far very happy with this machine. The installation book for attaching the Snow Blower was awful to follow. I have had many JD tractors and the Decks are easy to install. Once you understand how to install the Snowblower it's pretty easy. Don't waste your time on the book. watch the video or even watch a video on UTube. I am ready for the Snow LOVE THIS MACHINE.

Great Power Steering

I upgraded from a x310 to the X390 Best decision I ever made 48 inch deck with hydraulic lift the actual cutting of grass looks better than the x310 both the 310 & 390 have Power steering & Hydraulic Lift but overall the extra cost is definitely worth it & the high back seat & extra Horse Power is all worth it don't even think about it just buy it

Have only mowed with my new 2021 X390 about 6 times but it does its thing flawlessly. The hydraulic lift and power steering are why I purchased the X390 and they don't disappoint. I have also ordered the snowblower attachment and I have no reason to believe it won't perform flawlessly as well. Easy to service and maintain is also a plus. Very happy with my purchase!

excellent mower, except...

Was about to by a X380, but nice salesman talked me into a a four wheel steering X384, even thought i only mow around two trees. Well, a few months later, I like the way it mows, Great 48" deck, nice mulch control option, powerful, if thirsty, Kawasaki 23 hp motor. My biggest disappointment with the mower is the 4 wheel steering. Yes it turns easily, but IT WILL NOT CUT IN A STRAIGHT LINE. I have tried lots of different tire pressures, which helped the jarring ride, but I guess I got used to cutting fairways, so I struggle with the steering.

Power steering! Yay!

The power steering is easier than my car. The hydraulic lift and lower of the deck with just the slight push/pull of the lever is super nice. The wide tires make going over random divots in the backyard nearly unnoticeable. The only thing I need to get used to are all of the pedals being on one side. ie while the mower is facing down a hill, how do I use the brake pedal to keep from continuing to roll down hill and press the reverse pedal to back up? But that's probably me the user that needs to get more acquainted with everything.

I only give this mower 4 stars because ,the powder coated deck should have been coated on the underside.This was very Important.,and should have a way to keep the blades running while in reverse until you choose differant.Fix these two items,and I would give this mower A 5 Star Plus ,Cadillac rating.

I have had two Deere riding mowers, the latest is an X380. I clean and maintain after every mowing and have never had an issue. I take into the dealer ever fall for a good going over and change the oil twice a year. It just turned over 4yrs old so the warranty is 3mo out. Interestingly enough, two of the spindle bearings were out after very few uses this summer. They said they were making noise. They made the same noise last year and they said nothing about it while it was under warranty. Now it cost me a good chunk to have them replaced.........now that the warranty is out. Pretty convenient for the dealer.

2018 X390 Great mower except for seat

I have had my 2018 X390 since April 2018 and have cut some heavy grass. My largest complaint is the seat cover material quality. It started to crack at about a year old. I took pictures of the crack and where it was stored and presented it to my John Deere dealer where I bought it from but they said it was not covered in the warranty. I don't put anything in my back pockets and it is stored inside a shed. Now the crack is larger and more have developed on the other side of the seat in the creases. I guess I need to buy some tape and a cover add-on. A word to the wise, don't get it stuck in the mud. I couldn't lift it out and had to use my little L185 Kubota tractor to pull it out. It is a very heavy unit. It cuts great and is very easy to turn. I love the power steering. Watch for the little vent cap on the transmission hydraulic reservoir. Mine fell off somewhere and had to get a new one. The blades from Deere dealership seem to work good. It has plenty of speed and power.

Seven years ago i bought a brand X. I had looked at a X350 then and I thought I would save a few bucks and go with brand X. Fast forward 7 years and the trans broke and not in a normal way.... This time i had no thoughts of brand X. My only thought X350 or a X390. After a test drive and and some thinking. I decided on the X390. The power steering, power deck and the serviceable transmission sold me. I have 3 acres to cut with trees and my cutting time with brand X with brand new blades was three hours sometime four and I would have to cut slow and watch my turns or I would have missed cutting with new blades... I have cut the lawn two times with my new X390 and have cut the time in 1/2 and I have a super looking lawn. I should of done then 7 years ago....

Great Product except

Its been running great for two years then while mowing one day it just stopped. After looking around for a while I found a cheep broken plastic piece attached to a rubber hose that went to the fuel tank\pump. its in a spot that is not easy to get to so brush or any other obstacle would not of likely caused the break. I called the dealer to see about getting it in to be fixed. 4 year bumper to bumper warranty you would think includes pick up, It doesn't. Not everyone has the means to bring in a ridding tractor for warranty service so be prepared to pay. That's not my case but everyone should know. I'm most disappointed in the cheap plastic part on the mower and the fact that John Deere is suppose to synonymous with quality and service I think these two have lost a lot in recent years.

Mower Deck is Difficult to service

I bought the X390 because of the Power Steering. Great feature! Other than that, it's pretty much like my previous X3xx series L&G tractors. Except -- this deck is harder to service. And it needs service due to abnormal belt wear. My very pricey replacement JD belt says "made in Romania." JD has removed the belt tensioning lever that all my other mowers had. Now it says, insert a 3/8" socket wrench to reduce the tension for belt removal. A breaker bar with a 3/8" adapter was a far better choice for me. Every new model that I get seems more difficult to service the mower deck. This model has the ACCEL DEEP mower deck. That means it can collect even more grass clippings. And I can't tell a whit of difference in the cut quality. To me this deck is a solution to a nonexistent problem. Overall, JD took one step forward and two steps back with the X390.

I bought my mower new in August 2017. It replaced a LA 145. The X390 is much more comfortable to operate with a better seat and more powerful engine. The mower deck cuts and discharges grass much quicker. The power steering is effortless and the power lift mower deck is great. I use it to cut two acres of lawn without a bagger. I highly recommend it.

After 22 years of buying Brand X, I'd had enough. So when Brand X's transmission failed while trying to do the last cut of last year, I bought the X390. The power steering is effortless, the ride is good and the engine is plenty powerful for the 54" deck which raises and lowers electrically. The instrument panel tells you all you need to know. I have to ask, why don't ALL lawn tractor manufacturers make the oil change as easy as Kawasaki does? The tractor "feels" robust so we'll have to see. Actually looking forward to the next 10 years of cutting 2 acres every week. Not really but this machine moves the drudgery scale needle much lower!
