Powering meaningful progress with John Deere Power Systems

John Deere showcases a range of technology solutions at CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2023

Waterloo, Iowa (March 14, 2023) — John Deere has expanded its powertrain offerings to include a new engine architecture that simplifies the integration of renewable fuels and has developed electric drivetrain and telematics solutions for OEM equipment. A selection of the latest John Deere innovations for the industrial market will be on display at CONEXPO-CON/AGG in the indoor John Deere booth (West Hall, Booth W40844), including the JD4 engine and John Deere Connected Support™. The company's new split path electrical mechanical transmission will be on display in the outdoor John Deere booth (Silver Lot, Booth S5020).

"When thinking about how to move toward a low-carbon future, we as an industry need to be open to a variety of solutions to meet the vast and varied needs of the off-highway market. There will be no singular solution to reaching our goal of low- and near-zero-carbon emissions," said Pierre Guyot, senior vice president of John Deere Power Systems (JDPS). " We must prioritize the continued improvement and innovation of ICE technologies as renewable fuels and electric and hybrid drivetrains play a role in creating a more sustainable future for the off-highway industry. Renewable fuels and hybridization will enable the industry to decarbonize existing fleets, allowing for a more immediate impact and progress toward reducing emissions."

An up-close look at engine advancements

While developments in electrification are helping to expand sustainable power solutions for the off-highway industry, internal combustion engines (ICE) will continue to be the most viable solution in the near term for some customers and heavy-duty applications.

Next Generation Engine Lineup

As regulations around emissions become increasingly stringent, OEMs are looking for ways to meet requirements without compromising equipment performance. To help customers navigate the ever-changing equipment power landscape, JDPS stripped down its engine design to the block and developed a new engine architecture that leverages the best of John Deere technologies to deliver new levels of reliability, durability, flexibility, and serviceability for a wide array of heavy-duty applications. This engine architecture simplifies the integration of renewable fuels with combustion engines and offers an expanded power range so OEMs can put John Deere power and performance into their entire line of equipment, from 36 to 677 kW (48 to 908 hp). The Next Generation Engine lineup includes the JD4, JD14, and JD18.

The JD18 has been chosen as a finalist for the inaugural Next Level Awards Program through CONEXPO. The award was created to honor exhibiting companies that are pushing the boundaries of technology and innovation to drive the construction industry forward. The winner will be selected by CONEXPO attendees through on-site voting.

The latest addition to the Next Generation Engine lineup is the JD4, which is making its first-ever appearance at CONEXPO-CON/AGG. Providing up to 120 kW (161 hp) of power, the JD4 features a rear gear train that provides customers with low noise and high PTO power. The engine also has an extended single turbo range and provides 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of maximum torque for exceptional high-load capacity and productivity.

JD9

As JDPS continues to expand its engine lineup to meet a wider array of power and performance needs, it is also optimizing the design and technology of its current engine offerings. JDPS is bringing a new and improved 9.0L engine to market. The JD9 will be on display for the first time in the John Deere booth. This next iteration of the 9.0L engine has been revised to deliver lower complexity and installation cost while still maintaining the exceptional quality and reliability that John Deere engines are known for. (The current 9.0L that is in production will continue to be available.)

A continued commitment to renewable fuels

John Deere is committed to bringing the most advanced, affordable, and effective renewable fuel solutions to its customers. Within the variety of available renewable fuels, John Deere considers biodiesel and renewable diesel fuel to be the most promising options for near-term integration into the off-highway equipment industry. John Deere sees the promising potential of renewable fuels for the short-term, rapid decarbonization of existing fleets when compared to the lengthier process of transitioning to electric vehicles. In 2022, John Deere was named as a recipient of a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy that is aimed at supporting the creation of solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions for on- and off-road vehicles. The company is leveraging its world-class engineering expertise to vet and test new technologies that help simplify the integration of renewable fuels with combustion engine technology as it strives to deliver more value and productivity to its customers.

Expanding electric drivetrain offerings

John Deere is also featuring its new split path electrical mechanical transmission at CONEXPO-CON/AGG. This new electrical mechanical transmission offers improved productivity, ease of operation, uptime, and efficiency all while paving the way to hybridization and the potential for off-boarding electrical power. As more OEMs look to integrate electric power, the new electrical mechanical transmission unlocks endless possibilities for how the off-boarded power could be used to power other implements.

Connection when it matters most
