Beyond its iconic gondolas, Venice, Italy's bustling port relies on a hardworking fleet to keep maritime traffic moving. The Corporazione Piloti Estuario Veneto, the city's essential pilot service, plays a crucial role — guiding vessels through the lagoon's intricate waters to keep commerce on track. To remain responsive, these boats receive regular upgrades, including the recent repower of the P4 pilot boat. Venice-based Omega Sprint and RAMA Motori S.p.A. collaborated on this project, installing a John Deere 9.0L engine to provide the power and efficiency needed for Venice's waterways.
The decision to repower the P4 and another pilot boat stemmed from two main issues: The original engines were nearing the end of their service life, and Corporazione Piloti Estuario Veneto required greater power to navigate the lagoon's challenging waters, which experience significant variations in water level due to twice-daily tidal flows.
Around-the-clock pilot service
Located at the end of the Po Valley, Venice's port spans over 2,000 hectares. As a major hub in the Mediterranean, it plays a key role in both the cruise and cargo sectors, connecting vital European networks. The Corporazione Piloti Estuario Veneto operates around the clock, guiding commercial vessels through the Venetian Lagoon, a shallow saltwater embayment that encircles the city. With expert knowledge of local conditions — such as tides, winds, and maritime traffic — they ensure safe navigation in both the port and lagoon.
Corporazione Piloti Estuario Veneto's pilot boats are designed for speed and stability, ready to respond swiftly to keep Venice's waterways clear. When the P4 pilot boat was due for a marine repower, the organization contacted Omega Sprint, a relatively young local shipyard with a solid reputation for delivering high-standard engine repowers that meet Venice's unique maritime needs. With extensive knowledge of Venice's challenging waters and a focus on work and pilot boats, Omega Sprint has recently become a key contributor to the regional nautical industry.
Since its founding, Omega Sprint has drawn on the engine expertise and aftermarket support of RAMA Motori, the John Deere engine distributor for Italy. Most recently, RAMA Motori suggested a 6.8L marine engine for a P7 pilot boat, also for Corporazione Piloti Estuario Veneto. For the repowering of the 9.25-meter fiberglass P4 pilot boat, which seats eight people, RAMA Motori recommended the John Deere 9.0L engine to meet the customer's request for reliable power, efficiency, and a long service life. The engine's compact design and lightweight construction enhance maneuverability in the lagoon's shallow waters while leaving ample space in the engine room for maintenance.

Marine engine testing for top performance
RAMA Motori Service, Training, and Testing Manager Davide Giuliani oversaw the engine installation and sea trials, ensuring that all John Deere standards were met and that Omega Sprint received the support they needed.
"We tested for responsiveness, fuel efficiency, and vibration," says Giuliani. "The sea trials exceeded our expectations. The engine proved agile when maneuvering the boat in tight spaces, reached full RPM in open water, and achieved excellent fuel efficiency with minimal noise and vibration."
RAMA Motori is dedicated to supporting Omega Sprint every step of the way — from brainstorming ideas to providing after-sales service.
"They're always quick to respond to questions, offering helpful answers that make our collaboration even smoother," says Federico Cardia, who owns Omega Sprint with his brother Amedeo. "Since we started working with RAMA Motori, they've been a huge part of our growth and success. They assist us in brainstorming the best solutions and consistently deliver on their promises. With RAMA Motori, we never have to worry about unpleasant surprises."
Navigating the future together
The successful repower of the P4 pilot boat, along with the previous P7, signifies exciting prospects for both RAMA Motori and Omega Sprint. Venice's pilot boats are essential for safe navigation of its bustling waterways, and with more boats in the fleet, further collaboration lies ahead.
